Modeling is a glamorous profession that has seen a significant increase in interest as a serious career option in recent years. In India, it was once considered a part-time job for students or a stepping stone for beauty queens and aspiring actresses. However, this perception has changed, with models like Namrata Sirodkar, Madhu Sapre, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Manpreet Brar, Priyanka Chopra, Diya Mirza, and Lara Dutt putting India on the international modeling map. The recent increase in advertising budgets by 30 to 50 percent has also boosted this career.
While modeling was traditionally dominated by women, men are now making their mark. Although opportunities still favor female models, the industry shows promise for men as well. Men’s fashion has become big business, and some advertisers prefer featuring both male and female models to appeal to all audiences.
Types of Modeling:
- Ramp Modeling:
- Ramp modeling involves walking the catwalk at fashion shows to display designer collections. Models need above-average height, a proportionate body, poise, grace, and the right attitude. They should be self-assured, spontaneous, and able to connect with the audience. Male models should ideally be six feet or taller, and female models should be at least five feet six inches.
- Advertisement Campaigns:
- Both electronic and print media require models with photogenic faces and the ability to emote in front of the camera. Print media involves posing for still photographs used in advertisements, brochures, calendars, etc., while electronic media includes commercials for TV, video, films, radio, and the internet. Age requirements vary based on the campaign content, with some focusing on family units and featuring models of all ages.
- Showroom Modeling:
- Models work as mannequins in export houses, garment manufacturers, or large clothing retailers, showcasing finished designs to buyers.
General Requirements:
- Models should have above-average height (men above six feet and women at least five feet six inches).
- They should have photogenic faces, perfect skin, hair, and teeth, good health, and stamina.
- Models must be hardworking, self-confident, and energetic.
Career Prospects:
- Successful models find regular work in product advertising, fashion shows, showroom and garment fairs, and work on a freelance or contract basis.
Remuneration:
- Professional modeling is lucrative, with earnings depending on the volume and frequency of assignments and individual popularity. Established models can earn an average of Rs. 20,000 to 30,000 per month.
Length of Career and Diversification:
- With careful attention to diet, exercise, sleep, and grooming, models can enjoy a career spanning up to 10 years. Afterward, they can transition to model coordination, set up modeling agencies, or pursue roles on TV as anchors, talk show hosts, or actors.
Courses/Training and Fees:
- Modeling schools, particularly in Delhi and Bombay, offer programs that include guidance on makeup, hairstyling, dressing, grooming, and tips on diet and exercise. Fees start at Rs. 5000 per program. These schools also offer personality development tips and advice on approaching advertising agencies. ‘Gladrags’ promotes models in India and abroad through competitions.
